What is EMDR Therapy? How Does EMDR Work?
EMDR therapy is a highly effective treatment that targets the distressing feelings, memories, and beliefs associated with the traumatic experiences. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and has been extensively researched and proven to be successful in relieving trauma-related symptoms.
EMDR therapy harnesses the brain's natural healing abilities to process and resolve the distressing effects of trauma. It involves a structured approach where specific traumatic memories or beliefs are targeted. Bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as eye movements, and dual awareness stimulation (DAS), such as taps, or tones, are used to engage both sides of the brain. As the bilateral stimulation/dual awareness stimulation is activated, the individual holds the target memory in mind, allowing for reprocessing and integration of new insights; as well as replacing negative beliefs with more positive beliefs and resources.
Through this process, the emotional intensity of traumatic memories are reduced, leading to healing and symptom relief. Working with a trained EMDR therapist is crucial for a safe and effective experience. At NG Mental Health Counseling, we are trained in EMDR therapy by an EMDRIA certified program to provide the support and compassion needed for your healing journey.
